The above is an abbreviated display of English department results from different schools compiled in such a way that each row represents a single school. Schools are identified by their code letter in the first column. When the full analysis for all subjects is returned to a school, only that particular school is identified, the identity of all the other schools participating remains anonymous.

The second column shows the syllabus code and the third column shows the examination board used. The syllabus number and examination board are included so that schools can be aware of what courses are being followed elsewhere and also to spot if a particular syllabus seems to be getting good results.

The group size for each school is shown because it is important, particularly in subject departments where numbers may not be so large, to consider whether the department performance reflects the efforts of perhaps one teacher with a small group or a large department with several members of staff.

The Indicator mean column is the average prior test score for the pupils in this English subject group. This is the measure of prior ability for the group. Different schools' English departments then have a common base against which to judge the performance of their pupils. One would expect a department with a higher average indicator score to get a higher average GCSE grade.

The performance of each English department in relation to other departments in their own school is shown in the eighth column of figures, headed "Diff.", by the difference between the subject average grade (6th column) and the group grade (7th column) achieved by all the pupils who sat English in all their examinations. A positive difference would show that the pupils who sat English did better on average in English than they did, on average, in their other GCSE subjects.

If schools wish, further analysis can be done to show the performance of teaching sets.

The final column shows the residual values for each school's English department and is a measure of the value-added for each department. This value is calculated by subtracting the value of the predicted grade (9th column) from that of the subject average grade (column 6). A positive residual of +6 would indicate the the pupils in a department had averaged a grade higher per pupil than they might have been expected to, a GCSE level grade being equivalent to 6 pts.
