Various ranges of points are shown and the numbers of pupils who achieved points totals within those ranges. Again a breakdown is shown according to gender, including the average points per candidate.
As per DFE requirements, the number of pupils achieving 5 or more GCSE grades A*-C, 5 or more grades A*-G, 1 or more grades A*-C and 1 or more grades A*-G are shown including the percentage of the year cohort that each figure represents. In addition figures are given for those who did not obtain any grade and those who were absent from all their examinations. This is not required at A level.
As from 1998 schools have been able to enter pupils for GCSE Short courses. Pupils are credited with exactly half the points per grade as for full GCSE courses. However there are special rules for the aggregation of GCSEs to provide performance measures, such as number and percentage of pupils achieving 5 or more GCSE grades A*-C. Click here for DfEE rules on GCSE Short courses.
It is possible to use these figures for comparison between different years, but again do not forget to consider the indicator of ability for each year compared.

N.B. Schools that enter candidates for a higher than average number of examinations are almost by default going to do better, if judged by this method alone, for their pupils will tend to acquire more points.
